Do you know what it feels like to be hungry? We may initially say, “sure, every day around 11.30 before lunch.” But that isn’t the type of hunger I’m talking about. The type of hunger I am talking about goes far beyond that. It doesn’t come from skipping breakfast, but from skipping meals for a day or two. True hunger is more than a rumble in your stomach; it is a place of quiet desperation. Can you imagine looking over your refrigerator and cabinets yet another time hoping that you would spot something in the house that you missed the last five times you looked for something to prepare for your children? Can you imagine thanking God, while you starve, for free school lunch because you knew it would be the only good meal your child eats all day at least until summer? Have you ever seriously considered stealing food from the grocery store so you and your family could eat? These concepts seem truly foreign to most of us, yet for many it is a cold stark reality. According to recent statistics 13% of the Georgia population is below the poverty line. Where is the poverty line drawn then? For a family of four you must have less than $18,810 in income. Could you live on that? When is the last time that you personally were hungry?
